Safety Steps: Before, During, and After

🌟 The Golden Rule: DROP, COVER, AND HOLD ON.

During the Earthquake (Indoors)

  • DROP to your hands and knees.
  • COVER your head and neck with your arms. Crawl under a sturdy table or desk.
  • HOLD ON to your shelter until the shaking stops.
  • Stay away from windows, glass, and heavy objects that could fall.
  • If in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.
  • Do not run outside or use elevators.

During the Earthquake (Outdoors)

  • Move away from buildings, streetlights, and utility wires.
  • Stay in an open area until the shaking stops.

Immediately After the Quake

  • Stay calm and expect aftershocks. Drop, Cover, and Hold On for every aftershock.
  • Check yourself and others for injuries; administer first aid if needed.
  • Put on sturdy shoes and work gloves to protect against broken glass.
  • If you smell gas, turn off the main gas valve (only if you know how). Do not light a match or turn on a light switch.
  • Check official sources (radio, mobile alerts) for instructions.
  • If near the coast, move to higher ground immediately in case of a tsunami.
  • Only call the emergency number (e.g., 911/112) for life-threatening situations.

🆘 Alternative Communication Methods

  • Whistle Signal: Three short blasts, one long blast (standard distress signal).
  • Text Messages: Send a text if phone lines are overloaded. Keep it short: "I'm OK" or "I need help at [Address]".
  • Out-of-Area Contact: Establish a single, distant family member to call. It is often easier to call long-distance than locally after a disaster.
